Find 10 images of your commodity. These images should “speak” the magical language of your commodity. You can edit (filter or effect) or simply find the images, but no type/text should be used. Try a historical approach in which earlier or “obsolete” images of your commodity make a spectacular appearance. The images don’t need to come directly from the marketing world of your commodity; they don’t, for instance, need to come from advertisements (though they definitely can come from there.) But they should in some (expanded) sense relate to the world of commodities at large. For instance, they could come from material that is demonstrating a new photographic or printing technology. Or maybe you find them in a film or an instagram post or a television show.
Focus on two things: (1) historicizing your commodity through a set of images, and (2) articulating the “imaginary” dimension of your commodity (how the magical dimension of your commodity appears in an image).
Utilize a slideshow technology to assemble and present your images to the class in the form of a short lecture. The slideshow technology (powerpoint, .gif, magic lantern, etc.) might condition the aesthetics of the presentation. Consider the order and transitions of the images. The slideshow should accompany a verbal discourse about the commodity. The presentation should take ten minutes.
